The Installation

  Where will the meter go?

The meter will be installed directly onto your incoming water service. If it is not possible to install the meter inside your home, your installer will provide you with further information and instructions for an outside chamber installation (see the “Outside Installations” section). Your new or upgraded meter will be fitted with a transmitter. These transmitters will allow meter readers to read your water meter from the street and eliminate the need for them to walk across your property or gain access inside your home to read the meter.

How do I prepare for the installation?

Step 1 – Find Your Shut-Off Valve
  • In most cases, the meter will typically be installed directly after the main shut-off valve where your water service enters your home
  • • Your shut-off valve is located on a pipe coming out from where your water service enters your home
  • It will have a round or straight handle
Step 2 – Clear the Area
  • To ensure installers have access to this area, please clear the area around the valve of all boxes and obstructions prior to the installation
  • At a minimum, please clear an area at least 12” wide, 6 ˝” high and 6” deep
Step 3 – The Installation
  • An adult at least 18 years of age, or older, must be at home during the inside installation
  • The meter will be installed where your water service enters your home
  • A typical installation will take about 1 hour to complete, barring any modifications that may be required
  • If you have a finished basement, a water service located behind drywall or paneling does not present a problem. After consulting with you, the installer will cut out a small section of drywall or paneling to gain access to the main shut-off valve. Once the installation is complete you can cover the hole yourself, or the installer will cover the hole with a carpentry access box. The hole must not be permanently covered in the event that your meter requires future maintenance.
